Film: The Dark Knight Trilogy
Starring: Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso
Which watch will save you from some trouble from supervillains? The Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso, of course. In the Dark Knight Trilogy, when keeping up appearances as billionaire playboy Bruce Wayne, Batman (Christian Bale) dons this timepiece, which was developed in 1931 for British polo players and is still considered one of the Swiss watchmaker’s masterpieces. But it’s when he becomes the caped crusader that the watch really shines. In one scene in Batman Begins, when Batman is poisoned by Scarecrow, he uses the watch as a communication device to call his trusty butler Alfred for an urgent rescue. It’s not a feature available on the retail version – but then you probably won’t be fighting a supervillain anytime soon.

Film: Red 2
Starring: TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre 1887 Chronograph
If you’re a dangerously stylish assassin whose mission it is to take out a super spy, then the gorgeous TAG Heuer Calibre 1887 Chronograph is the watch for you. That’s the lesson from the 2013 action comedy Red 2, where Korean superstar Lee Byung-hun plays Han Cho Bai, a formidable foe to Bruce Willis’ retired CIA agent. Lee makes quite an entrance in the movie, in an all-action scene in a mansion in Hong Kong’s Mid-Levels district. But from a horology perspective, his watch – an effortlessly elegant motor racing timepiece, which Lee dons while doing proper martial arts – arguably steals the scene.

Film: Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps
Starring: IWC Portugieser Perpetual Calendar
In the fiercely competitive world of Wall Street, social standing is everything – and for a financial prodigy on the rise, looking the part is as important as being able to play the game. Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, the sequel to Oliver Stone’s acclaimed 1987 original, again stars Michael Douglas as the greed-fuelled Gordon Gecko. But it’s his would-be protégé, Jacob Moore (played by Shia LaBeouf) who has it all to prove in the cutthroat world of finance. And how does he look the part? With an IWC Portugieser Perpetual Calendar, a timepiece cased in 18-carat white gold and covered with sapphire glass. At once elegant, understated and striking, it’s an ideal watch for the ambitious businessman.
